Lindo Zwane

2020

Taking place in the townships or outskirts of the city, the selected works of Lindo Zwane present scenes we have all experienced and discarded as either mundane or visual noise, something normal that happens everyday.

A woman carrying heavy luggage on her head, a man selling newspapers or pushing a trolley... Kids playing in the streets with toys some would consider unconventional or reflective of poor socioeconomic standing.

With a rather nostalgic feel to them, the images somehow seem to surpass time, as existing both in the present and the past.

His use of colour reminiscent of old photography holding precious memories and feelings, The works of Zwane embrace the culture of survival, of making it beyond your means and not letting your surroundings hinder your play or your hustle.

Highlighting notions of resourcefulness or lack of resources being key aspects of his work one cannot seem to get over the words from the South African freedom charter of 1955 that states that "The people shall govern" that are included in select works.

The words haunt our presence as we still realize that we are not completely there, still a long way to go but that we are still resilient beyond circumstance.

"The people shall govern

The people shall share in the country's wealth

The land shall be shared amongst those who work it

There shall be houses, security and comfort"

(snippet from the freedom charter 1955).
