Mashudu Nevhutalu

Evoking feelings of nostalgia, warmness, and home, the artworks of Mashudu Nevhutalu are a visual enchantment that one can easily get lost in.

The artworks are representational of the artist's attempt to hold on to a plethora of happy memories; as they reflect a longing to go back into a special or significant moment in the past.

Mostly using imagery from his own collection of old photographs, Nevhutalu paints beautiful images of the women in his family that have contributed to his upbringing and hugely impacted his happy childhood.

Nevhutalu states that there was always an aunt, grandmother, or older sibling that helped his mother in nurturing him, and with this body of work celebrates them and all other women that coincidently play this role in so many lives effortlessly.

His often warm palette made up of bright yellow’s, rich oranges, and pinks as well as invigorating shades of reds are reflective or attempt at signifying various forms of euphoria and elation.

Serving as a time capsule the works of Nevathulu visually teleports one to a simpler time, inquiring you to reflect on those special days with your loved ones ‘that cannot be replayed or reacted to.

It makes one think of passed ones and the legacies of love they may have left behind and calcified in our memories. His figures are often captured standing still or sitting peacefully as if inviting the viewer into their peaceful environment and encouraging for a more intuitive pursuit of being content in the present as the present is always fleeting away.
