Solomon Omogboye

2020

Reminiscent of the beautiful paintings of Edgar Degas, The striking artworks of Nigerian born Solomon Omogboye are a wonder to gaze at. Made with charcoal and pastel and at times inclusive of other media such as gold-leaf. Omogboye passionately captures in stills and reflects beautiful sensual movement of young ballet dancers.

His body of work includes expressive joyful, youthful portraits of young happy children, countering impoverished and destitute representative archive of black bodies and black children. But it’s his interest in the ballet dances that I will focus on.

Observing and apprehending the physical language of the body, Omogboye shows the power of expression in dance while also highlighting the sensitivity and vulnerability of the dancers as he regards dance as a form of physical manifestation and confession of the inner soul.

Nothing can be hidden in dance, as it full of emotion and movement, even in cases where movement is omitted, one can still find quiet exhales of articulation.

Based on either truth, fiction or the use of imagination a dancer can release and assert full expressions of life, which Omogboye encapsulates and handles with respect showing his love for the artform, and the strength and appreciation for the young women he renders so beautifully

Recording the meticulous movement and celebration of what the human body can achieve with discipline, practice and love for the craft. Omogboye’s manipulation and use of the medium results in glorious sophisticated interpretation of the art of ballet.
