Theko Boshomane

Multi-layered and deeply embedded with emotive nuances the oil works of Theko Boshomane reflect his personal exploration of his own emotional experiences in his adult life.
Rich in colour, and with overt use of the hue blue that signifies the spiritual pursuits of intellect and self-worth as well the celestial love of truth and the green hue that carries with it the symbolism of balance, growth, renewal, and vitality, his artworks are made up of many visual planes. Featuring often totem animals such as butterflies, koi fish, birds, horses, goats, sheep, and lions which serve as visual allegories for Boshomane’s search for peace, harmony, freedom, and strength. The use of these totem animals is ethereally reflective as Koi fish are regarded as courageous fighters who don’t give up and are believed to draw positive energy, while white birds are known mostly as a representation of peace, harmony, innocence, and purity. In the background of his works one also finds fragments of a human body which brings the comprehension of these concepts from the abstract into the personal.
Stating that his work initially served as a representation of pain, as he echoes on his history of being bullied when he was younger, Boshomane states how the work forms part of a healing process and an outlet meant to inspire hope. Having strong hints of an imagined world or sacred safe space, his work invites the viewer to engage with their own histories, traumas, and feelings and mature into a process of healing themselves.
